God’s family is just that–a family, a community. God did not just place individuals on the earth to fend for themselves. Rather, He made us social creatures.  We have a need for relationships with God and with others. That’s a large part of why the church exists.

Christ once said, “For where two or three are gathered in My name, there am I among them.” – Matthew 18:20. The Apostle Paul also tells us “For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.” – Romans 12:4-5

Therefore, membership in the church isn’t like membership at a country club or at Sam’s Club. It’s not something where you say, “What do I get for signing up?”

Membership in a church is becoming part of a community, being part of the body of Christ.  In becoming a member, you state that you share the same faith and confession of the triune God and Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. You recognize an accountability to the Lord and to your brothers and sisters in Christ to live in accord with God’s revealed word. You share the joys and struggles, the hopes and fears of your fellow members. And as a member, you pledge to be an active part of God’s work in this church through worship and service.

The adult information class is held periodically throughout the year as requested.  The class is for those who would like to learn more about Christianity and the teachings of the Lutheran Church.  It may be taken with a view toward becoming members of St. John’s—although there is no requirement or pressure to do so.  We are currently holding this class during our morning Bible Study hour with videos on our website. The class is taught in an informal style with plenty of opportunity to ask questions, but other than introductions, no one is called upon to speak—and there are no quizzes or memory work assignments, either. The course is designed to be comfortable for all who attend. Current members who would like to take the class as a refresher are also welcome. If you are interested, please use the form to the right or call the office. The course usually meets about eight times for an hour to an hour and a half.
